You may have seen in various forms of social media over the past month or so, a great number of references from various users to dog thefts, properties being marked by ‘dog nappers’, vans driving around the areas with suspicious males looking to steal dogs and a number of other similar scenarios.
I have been contacted by concerned residents who have seen these reports and, understandably, have worried about the safety of both their animals and themselves. I would like to state that we are NOT aware of any dog thefts, attempted dog thefts or any assaults or other activity that has manifested due to any attempt to take dogs from owners. I would urge people to remain vigilant, as always, around keeping property, including pets and gardens, as secure as possible but not to worry unduly around specific targeting due to pets. Please continue to contact Police should you be aware of any suspicious activity on 101 and enjoy the good weather and easing of lockdown restrictions, especially over the Easter period. As always, I can be contacted via ian.goodwin@durham.police.uk if you have any questions, concerns or queries. |
